Karma
Like most areas, we have council "chuck-out days" where people will put stuff on the roadside to be taken away to charity or the tip. And we've chucked out our share. But it seems a lot of these things don't end up anywhere near the tip as they get vulturised by other inhabitants to be recycled in their home. We stuck a near new Weber BBQ out on the lawn once and watched it getting wheeled away a couple of hours later by a happy young woman who looked like all her christmases had come at once. We also sent a table and chairs off the same way and a bunch of bits and bobs over the years. And every now and then we will find something handy to take home for ourselves. Last night we got lucky as karma came our way again. Someone put out one of those "temporary" closets like you get from IKEA. For now it will clear all the junk away from the floor in the spare room and I'm hoping when we move into a house I will be able to steal it away to store my yarn in. I can see my needles going in those little shoe pockets really nicely. Now some people might say a feeble bit of a closet isn't much repayment for a new Weber or a dining set, but in my opinion it's all about what's useful to the owner. There have been complaints from residents about the practice - that it's unsightly or whatever. Honestly. I hope they keep it going - it's a great tradition that encourages people to re-use old things instead of buying new stuff, kind of like a free flea market on your own street.

beck - i agree - council pickups are great and reduce landfill if people choose to re-use others' old items. you should try freecycle.com in your area. same concept but online. people let you know what they are throwing out and you can ask them if you can have it!! very cool.
hey that's a great idea. in canberra they didn't have chuckout days, but they had a store running at the tip (called rewind i think) where they would take things that had been left for the rubbish heap and clean them up for sale. i got a great old blackwood dresser there once that just needed some drawer handles and a bit of linseed oil. i have to admit i love combing through other people's abandoned furniture looking for something to do up.
ooops for those of you who want to know - it's freecycle.org not .com
I too love the concept of the kerbside pickups. Why be embarrassed or upset about others going through the things you don't want.
I am a regular user of freecycle. I've never got anything from anyone but I've give plenty of stuff away. Beware of those who ask for EVERYTHING though and never follow through on pick up. Some people are freecycle groupies.
hubby and i sometimes drive around snooty suburbs when they are having chuck out days. rich people throw out the most amazing stuff. things that they don't want because they are too last season. since we bought the van it's been great - you wouldn't believe the things we can get in the back of it ;)
